  • Policy Support Facility

A Mutual Learning Exercise (MLE) is a PSF service that brings together countries to exchange best practices and tackle shared Research and Inn0vation (R&I) challenges. MLEs offer structured knowledge sharing and collaborative problem-solving on specific R&I issues, helping countries learn from each other and implement effective R&I strategies.

This MLE addresses the creation of national R&I funds, crucial for fostering innovation and economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa. Adequate financing is essential for addressing key issues like youth unemployment, industrialisation, and climate change. National R&I funds can attract investments, support local businesses, and drive sustainable development.

Main Objectives:

  • Knowledge Exchange: Share experiences, challenges, and best practices in establishing national R&I funds.
  • Capacity Building: Enhance skills of policymakers through practical workshops on fund governance, legal frameworks, and sustainability strategies.
  • Networking: Foster regional collaboration and create a network of R&I authorities for ongoing support and partnership.

Expected Outcomes

  • Handbook: A comprehensive guide on developing and implementing national R&I funds, featuring shared challenges, solutions, and a regional benchmarking analysis.
  • Network: An informal network of R&I representatives for continued knowledge exchange and collaboration.
  • Capacity Building: Strengthened abilities of national administrations to establish and manage R&I funds effectively.
