Policy Support Facility – Closure of the first activity of the Mutual Learning Exercise on R&I policies and strategies in Addis Ababa

Organised in Addis Ababa from 14 to 17 February 2023 by the OACPS Research and Innovation Programme, in partnership with the UN Inter-agency Task Team (UN-IATT), this first Mutual Learning Exercise on R&I policies and strategies brought together representatives from over a dozen countries, mostly in Africa.

The MLE event was composed of two parts:

  • a knowledge exchange meeting, on how to successfully develop and implement R&I policies and strategies.
  • capacity building on STI policy and policy instruments for achieving sustainable development goals.

Participants that have been assisted in reforming and strengthening their national R&I ecosystems by either the OACPS R&I PSF or by UN agencies working on Capacity Building in Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals, enhanced their capacities through sessions on various topics, such as current approaches to STI policy making in the context of SDGs, with focus on open science and gender equality, STI policy instruments design and implementation, innovation and entrepreneurship, technology transfer needs assessment and STI policy monitoring and evaluation.

This event in Ethiopia is the first step in a 7-month process carried out by high-level international experts, through a structured exchange to identify good practices, lessons learned and success factors based on robust evidence, and explore the best ways to respond to current and future challenges, through efficient and sustainable R&I policies and strategies.

Other steps will include an international benchmarking of best practices and further discussions on other relevant topics, and lead to the elaboration of a handbook.
