The project “Pacific Adoption of Waste-to-Energy Solutions” (PAWES) aims to address critical challenges related to inadequate solid waste management and energy poverty in the Pacific region.
By integrating renewable energy technologies with waste management, PAWES seeks to promote the adoption of innovative waste-to-energy solutions (WES). Coordinated by the Pacific Community (SPC) in New Caledonia, in partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) based in Samoa, the project runs from December 2021 to December 2024. With a total budget of €2,871,342, including €2,400,000 funded by the European Union, PAWES focuses on strengthening the regional ecosystem for research and innovation by enhancing stakeholder capacities, improving data accessibility, and fostering cross-sectoral collaboration.
The ultimate goal is to sustainably reduce the volume of waste ending up in landfills while providing new sources of renewable energy, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development and environmental resilience of Pacific nations.
