Togo Advances Knowledge Economy: Launching National Research and Innovation Fund

In a significant stride towards fostering a knowledge-based economy, Togo is set to establish the National Research and Innovation Fund (FONARI-T), as detailed in a comprehensive report by the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OEACP). The initiative, designed with the financial backing of the European Union, aims to tackle systemic challenges in Togo’s research and innovation (R&I) ecosystem and bolster its contribution to sustainable development.

The report outlines a decade-long roadmap for the implementation of FONARI-T, emphasizing its strategic alignment with Togo’s 2025 Government Roadmap. Key objectives include stimulating local innovation, enhancing the technological capabilities of industries, and encouraging private-sector investment. The fund will also address existing barriers such as limited financial resources and weak collaboration between public and private entities in R&I.

Drawing insights from similar initiatives in countries like Kenya, Senegal, and Burkina Faso, FONARI-T will prioritize interdisciplinary projects and promote gender equity in its programming. The fund’s governance model will initially align with the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, with plans to evolve into an autonomous agency within ten years.

FONARI-T aims to provide diverse financial support, including grants, venture capital, and guarantees for long-term bank loans. The report further recommends leveraging partnerships with international donors and local private entities to diversify funding sources.

This initiative is poised to transform Togo’s R&I landscape, positioning the nation as a competitive player in regional and global innovation markets. The implementation of FONARI-T marks a crucial step in addressing underutilized research outcomes and creating a robust framework for integrating research into societal and industrial development.
